DEFORA has integrated income generation and human rights by supporting OVCs and their families with income generation projects including dairy farming, piggery

Impact

  • Increased awareness in communities of the area of operation on child rights promotion and protection which has reduced incidences of child abuse, especially in schools of Kyenjojo.

  • Increased parents’ participation and involvement in schools’ activities and programs leading to improved parenting and pupil school retention.

  • DEFORA has been able to reach over 20,000 people in the Rwenzori region through the training of teachers and school clubs in rights-based advocacy for the promotion and protection of children’s rights.

  • Supported OVCs in vocational skills in the area of operation and these gained skills in carpentry, tailoring, and hairdressing and have established business centers where they are earning income for self-sustenance.

  • DEFORA has also supported OVCs and their families with income-generating projects including piggery, poultry, and goat-rearing projects at the household level to improve their incomes so that they can access their basic necessities.

  • DEFORA has formed and trained 76 VSLA groups, (with over 2,000 members) which has significantly improved the welfare of the marginalized and poor women and youths.

  • School Management Committees (SMCs) and Parents Teacher Associations (PTA) have been strengthened to deal with violence against children (VAC) in target schools and this has made them friendlier to the pupils.

  • Leaders in districts of the Rwenzori region have been encouraged by the project to support policies and practices that eliminate violence against children through radio programs, public events, and dialogue meetings.

  • DEFORA further trained over 5000 people (pupils, parents, and women’s groups) in making reusable sanitary pads which have enabled the girl child to keep in school.
